Presentation: Hear from a bariatric surgeon who was also a patient

Speaker: Dr. James Hamilton, General, Vascular and Bariatric Surgeon

About Dr. Hamilton:

As the son of a family medicine physician from Wakeeney, Kansas, Dr. James Hamilton’s interest in medicine began while accompanying his father on rounds at an early age.  Dr. Hamilton graduated Magna cum Laude from Kansas State University, and began his career as a physician upon graduation from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Kansas City Campus, where he served as President of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and as President of the Medical Student Assembly.  Jim completed his surgery residency at the New England Deaconess/Harvard Surgical Service in Boston, Massachusetts, where he married his wife, Sylvia, who was completing her Master’s Degree in Organ at the New England Conservatory of Music.  Dr. Hamilton trained for an additional year as a Registrar in general and vascular surgery at the University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland. After residency, Jim completed a fellowship in liver and biliary surgery at the University of Bern, Switzerland, where he cared for patients and taught medical students using the German language.

Dr. Hamilton’s interest in bariatric surgery is both personal and professional, as he underwent successful bariatric surgery as a patient in 2005.  Soon after, he began performing bariatric surgery for his patients, who have the benefit of a surgeon who not only performs their surgeries, but also is a fellow traveler in their lifelong treatment of the disease of obesity.

In addition to surgery and raising three children with his wife of almost 40 years, Dr. Hamilton’s many interests include singing, playing the guitar, hiking, fishing, gardening and working on old cars.
