Preventing Children's Sports Injuries

Fall sports seasons will be here before you know it! Participating in sports is a great way for any child to meet friends, maintain a healthy weight and have fun. With any sport comes the risk of injury, and according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control, more than half of all sports injuries in children are preventable. Keep reading to find out what parents can do to help their kids prevent sports injuries.

  • Schedule your child a preseason physical before joining a sports team.
  • Make sure your child is properly hydrated before, during and after a game or practice.
  • Ensure your child gets a good night sleep every night. Well-rested athletes perform better on the field (and in the classroom).
  • Stress the importance of proper stretching and warming up.
  • Provide a healthy, well-balanced diet full of fruits, vegetables and lean proteins.
  • Check the court, playing field or other surface your child is playing on for holes, ditches and slippery conditions.
  • Ensure that your child uses the appropriate safety gear, such as helmets and athletic shoes. Using the right equipment and safety gear for the sport can lower the chance of getting injured.
  • Learn and follow safety rules for your child's particular sport.

Despite your best efforts, your child may get hurt while playing sports. When in doubt, always call your physician for guidance on seeking medical care for your child. Dr. Peter Loo, sports medicine specialist at The University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus, specializes in the prevention and management of all types of injuries affecting the bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves. He also is a specialist in concussion management. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Loo, please call 785-379-4600.
