Virtual Baby Basics and Bonding

In this class, you will learn how to diaper, bathe, swaddle, and use calming techniques to soothe your baby. This class includes what to expect at the health center and what to expect with a newborn the first few weeks after they are born. Discover techniques that will help you build a stronger bond with your baby. Learn about the golden hour, skin-to-skin, infant massage, baby wearing, and developmental play activities to do together.

Boot Camp for New Dads

Infant and Child CPR

This course teaches choking and rescue breathing techniques for infants, children and adults. Our instructors are trained and certified through the American Heart Association. Participants will take the friends and family course for infants, children, and adults. Parents and grandparents are encouraged to attend. Course size is limited to 10 participants.

Labor Support and Pain Management

At the completion of this class, participants will be able to discuss and/or demonstrate a variety of non-medical comfort measures that can be applied to their labor and birth experiences, including (but not limited to) hydrotherapy, heat or cold therapy, aromatherapy, upright positioning, positive affirmations, hypnobirthing or meditation, guided relaxation, massage, and much more.  Expectant parents will also be well versed in their options for medicalized pain relief measures such as epidurals and IV pain medication, and any associated risks, benefits, and alternatives.  Participants will be able to verbalize and indicate to their support person the comfort measures that they wish to implement in their labor experience, and support team members will have a well-rounded understanding of techniques that their pregnant partner can try while in labor.

Preparing for Pregnancy

Perfect for pre-conception and pregnant people in their first trimester. At the completion of this course, families will be well versed on normal pregnancy progression, and normal prenatal care scheduling, testing, and procedures. Participants will receive information on healthy diet and exercise choices in pregnancy, as well as information to begin the discussion about the implications that a new baby may have on their mental, physical, emotional, and financial health. Participants will also be able to identify comfort measures for early pregnancy discomforts that they may wish to utilize as their pregnancy progresses.

The Basics of Childbirth

At the completion of the class, pregnant individuals and their accompanying support person will be able to discuss and apply standard vocabulary regarding normal spontaneous vaginal delivery of their baby to their own impending labor and birth experiences.  Participants will be well versed in the normal progression of labor and a vaginal birth, and will feel prepared for the process of laboring and birthing their baby at The University of Kansas Health System St.  Francis Campus.  Participants will also leave this class with a well-rounded understanding of basic labor anatomy, birth hormone physiology, and overall birth process. A tour of our New Life Center will be offered at the conclusion of this class.

Cesarean Birth

August 10th, 2:00 – 4:00 PM

At the completion of this class, participants will be well versed in the admission process for a C-section at The University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus.  Families will have a well-rounded understanding of what to expect for themselves and their new baby before, during, and after the procedure.  This course will go over preoperative procedures and preparations for surgery, spinal anesthesia, commonly given medications before, during, and after the surgery, and what to expect in the first 12 hours after a C-Section delivery. Families will also be educated on how a Cesarean recovery may differ from a vaginal delivery recovery.

Virtual Baby Safety and Wellness

This is a free online class that you can conveniently take from the comfort of your home. In this class, you will learn how to implement safety measures in your home to keep your baby safe. Receive the latest information about SUID (Sudden Unexpected Infant Death) prevention and car seat safety, as well as baby-proofing tips. Learn what to keep in the medicine cabinet, when to call the doctor, and how to take your baby’s temperature. This class also includes information about what, when, and how to feed your baby the first year.

Childbirth Master Class

In this course, we will cover everything you need to know for labor, delivery, and postpartum, including: childbirth basics, the ins and outs of induction, what happens during a c-section delivery, pain management options and techniques for contraction pain, how your support team can help during labor, the importance of a doula in the birth space, common interventions and options offered in labor, informed decision making tools, self-advocacy in the birth space, preparing your body & baby for labor, labor and pushing positions, what to expect from your postpartum experience and postpartum body, what to expect when it comes to your newborn baby, and postpartum rehabilitation of your mind & body. This is a 7-hour class, with a 1-hour break for lunch.

Super Sibling

Prepare your child(ren) for the changes a new baby brings. Parents and children will view a DVD and tour the New Life Center. Children will also create a special birthday welcome for their newborn sibling. A snack will be served. This class is for children ages two years and up. Induction and Intervention in Labor

August 24th, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

At the completion of this class, expectant parents will be able to draw fully informed conclusions about the options for induction and/or intervention that they may be offered through the course of their labor and delivery, including (but not limited to): Pharmaceutical induction of labor, continuous IV fluids, traditional and intermittent EFM, Pitocin for augmentation, cervical exams, epidurals, IV pain medication, and much more.  Participants will be able to initiate informed discussions with their providers about the interventions they are interested in or hesitant about using in their birth story to facilitate more effective and clear communication between families and providers. Families will have the background knowledge necessary to use the BRAIN acronym for informed decision making in a healthcare situation.

Virtual Weight Loss Surgery Support Group

If you have had weight loss surgery or are in the process of having surgery, we invite you to attend our free online bariatric support group. Gain education and encouragement through social interaction, guided discussion and guest speakers from the comfort and convenience of your home.

Postpartum Family Support Group

The Postpartum Family Support Group provides a safe place for any new parent to ask questions, share experiences, receive encouragement and connect with other parents. The group is led by a certified lactation nurse consultant who can also provide instruction and support for breastfeeding and mental health. The class is offered in person on the third Thursday of every month from 4-5 p.m. in one of the second floor meeting rooms at The University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus hospital. Parents are welcome to bring infants to the meetings.
