TOPEKA, Kan. (June 20, 2024) – June is Men’s Health Month, a crucial time to emphasize the importance of proactive healthcare for men. In alignment with this focus, The University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus is excited to announce the introduction of groundbreaking technologies in prostate cancer detection and management, setting new standards in patient care for the greater Topeka community.
Leading innovation in Shawnee County, the health system’s St. Francis Campus is now offering a minimally invasive prostate biopsy procedure that significantly reduces the risk of infection, improves imaging accuracy, and potentially increases cancer detection rates. This state-of-the-art fusion-guided biopsy integrates MRI and transrectal ultrasound technology, enabling urologists to precisely target suspicious tissue for biopsy.
“We are thrilled to offer this groundbreaking and potentially life-saving technology,” said Dr. Leigh Gilpin, D.O., urologist at the health system’s St. Francis Campus. “Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men, with 1 in 7 men receiving a diagnosis during their lifetime. The MRI-guided fusion biopsy procedure enhances our ability to detect and treat prostate cancer with unparalleled precision.”
“Prostate cancer is one of the most diagnosed cancers in men worldwide,” Dr. Gilpin continued. “By merging MRI findings with ultrasound imaging, we create a three-dimensional view of the prostate. This advanced imaging accuracy allows us to target suspicious areas effectively, including those difficult to reach with traditional transrectal approaches.”
This advanced procedure is particularly beneficial for patients with rising PSA levels or those with a diagnosis of prostate cancer under active surveillance. The health system’s St. Francis Campus is at the forefront of enhancing prostate cancer diagnostics, ensuring that patients receive the most advanced and precise care available.
Celebrate Men’s Health Month by encouraging the men in your life to take charge of their health. Early detection and advanced treatments like those offered at the health system’s St. Francis Campus are key to combating prostate cancer and other health issues men face.
