Our structural heart surgeons provide the following procedures:

  • Atrial septal defect (ASD) closure: This procedure involves closing a hole in the wall (septum) that separates the upper chambers (atria) of the heart. The hole allows oxygen-rich blood to mix with oxygen-poor blood, which can strain the heart and lungs. The closure can be done surgically or through a catheter-based approach.
  • Left atrial appendage occlusion (LAOO): This procedure is used to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib). It involves blocking off the left atrial appendage, a small pouch in the heart where blood clots often form in AFib patients. This is typically done using a catheter-based device.
  • Patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure: This procedure closes a small hole between the upper chambers of the heart that didn’t close naturally after birth. While many people with a PFO never experience symptoms, it can be closed to reduce the risk of stroke or other complications.
  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR): This minimally invasive procedure replaces a diseased aortic valve without the need for open-heart surgery. A catheter is used to implant a new valve within the existing valve, improving blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body.
