Pelvic Health Therapy

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles, ligaments and connective tissues that supports the bladder, bowel and other pelvic organs. A strong pelvic floor is vital for supporting these pelvic organs. When the pelvic floor is not functioning correctly, it can cause issues with bowel and bladder control as well as pain. Therapy is an important intervention for those suffering from pelvic pain and/or pelvic floor dysfunction. Our pelvic health therapists have advanced training through the Herman & Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute to treat men, women and children suffering from pelvic health disorders. Our expertise and experience will allow us to design a program specific to meet your needs.

What is pelvic health therapy?

Pelvic health therapy is a specialized form of therapy using evidence-based treatments to improve the overall health of your pelvic floor. Therapies include evaluation, education, exercises, biofeedback and neuromuscular retraining to strengthen your pelvic floor and relieve pain.

Patients need a prescription from their physician (primary care or other specialist) for pelvic health therapy. Talk to your doctor to see if pelvic health therapy is right for you.

Are you a candidate for pelvic rehabilitation therapy?

Conditions that may benefit from pelvic rehabilitation therapy include:

In women or men

  • Urinary symptoms: Frequency, urgency or leakage
  • Bowel symptoms: Incontinence or constipation
  • Pain: Abdominal, pelvic and/or tailbone
  • Oncology rehabilitation: Postsurgical or postradiation pain, scar tissue pain, tightness or incontinence

In women

  • Prolapse symptoms: Pressure, pain, heaviness or the feeling of something “falling out”
  • Sexual dysfunctions: Pain with sexual intercourse
  • Pregnancy: Pre- and postpartum pain, incontinence, prolapse or scar tissue pain (C-section or perineal)

In children

  • Nocturnal enuresis: “Bed-wetting” at night beyond the age when the bladder should be controlled
  • General urinary incontinence

What to expect

Your therapist will perform an evaluation to identify the causes of your incontinence or pain. An initial evaluation can include a history overview, a biofeedback assessment of the pelvic floor muscles, an internal examination, education and initiation of a home exercise program. Follow-up appointments include treatment options such as core strengthening, pelvic floor exercises, bladder retraining, and use of biofeedback to strengthen and restore continence and healthy bladder habits. For pain, therapy offers relaxation techniques, manual therapy, biofeedback, and exercises to decrease pain and restore function.

Pelvic floor therapy for women after childbirth

For many women, pregnancy or childbirth may have weakened that floor, causing issues such as urinary or fecal incontinence, constipation, pelvic organ prolapse, pain with intercourse and C-section or perineal scar pain. Fortunately, there are treatment options available to help you regain control of your pelvic health.
