Tidbit Tuesday: Supplements

Weight loss surgery is about improving your health and a big part of improving your health is getting proper nutrition.  It is hard for anyone to get good nutrition with a normal digestive system and after bariatric surgery, it becomes even more difficult.  Because of the surgical changes, your body cannot extract all the nutrients it needs from your meals and therefore, you must take daily supplements for the rest of your life.  Supplements are of upmost importance because deficiencies can impact blood, bone, muscle and neurological health.  Routine testing with your doctor is done to optimize healthy outcomes and reduces the risk of becoming deficient.

Below you will find the nutrients needed for each surgery:

If you are someone who experiences nausea when taking vitamin and mineral supplements, try these tips to help avoid stomach upset:

  • Take your vitamin and mineral supplements with food.  Taking supplements with a meal, snack or protein shake can help minimize or alleviate nausea for many people.
  • For some, taking supplements right before bed may be helpful.
  • Portion your supplements as evenly throughout the day as possible.  If you need two or more servings of vitamins, split the doses and take them separately.  This may enhance the absorption of certain vitamins and minerals.
  • Calcium can be divided and taken throughout the day and separate from your multivitamins.  Luckily, calcium is not a mineral that is commonly associated with nausea.
  • When starting a new supplement, start with a small dose for a few days and if symptoms allow, increase the dose recommended by your provider or that is found on the label of the supplement.
