To achieve the highest level of quality and patient safety, The University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus remains committed to adopting the latest best practices and most advanced technologies in the health care industry. We are actively engaged in researching and implementing quality improvement initiatives aimed at measuring and enhancing patient outcomes.
One key area of focus is reducing hospital-acquired infections, including catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). To address this, we implemented a new protocol and proactive workflow designed to decrease CAUTI cases. These measures included:
- Conducting a daily review during safety huddles to assess the indications and necessity of all Foley catheters in use.
- Introducing new external catheter options.
- Establishing more stringent criteria for Foley catheter use.
- Including education on proper Foley catheter insertion and care as part of nursing orientation.
In 2022, our facility recorded 11 CAUTI cases. Following the implementation of these protocols, that number was reduced to just 1 case in 2024, a 90% reduction.
