We believe in practicing surgery in an environment that respects the dignity of every patient. The University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus Tallgrass Ambulatory Surgery Center opened as a free-standing, multi-specialty, ambulatory surgery center in December 2002. The center was designed to reflect how our surgeons would want to be treated as patients. In 2019, the surgery center became a part of The University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus. By becoming part of St. Francis Campus, we offer our patients and surgeons seamless access to the resources of a major hospital and with coordination of care across all settings.
Tallgrass Ambulatory Surgery Center is a multispecialty surgery center that houses three operating rooms and one procedure room. Its specialty focus includes general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, pain management, plastic surgery (reconstructive or cosmetic), podiatry and retinal procedures, urology and weight loss surgery.
Our warm and comfortable setting, along with friendly, personal attention helps reduce the apprehension frequently associated with surgery.

There are many reasons to choose Tallgrass Ambulatory Surgical Center. Due to improved technology, less invasive surgical techniques, advances in pain control and the increased pressure to reduce the high cost of hospitalization, a great number of all surgeries today are performed on an outpatient basis. Increasingly, many of the more common surgical procedures – knee, shoulder and hip arthroscopy, laparoscopic procedures, pain management injections and cataract removals – take place in free-standing outpatient surgery centers like Tallgrass Ambulatory Surgical Center.
Compared with traditional inpatient surgery, there are many advantages to choosing to have your outpatient procedure at Tallgrass Ambulatory Surgical Center:
Efficiency - It takes much less time in a specialized Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) like ours to prepare an operating room for the next patient than a standard hospital. Improved efficiency allows our surgeons to treat more patients in the same amount of time than he or she would be able to do in a hospital.
Greater control over procedures and standards – Many doctors prefer working in an ASC because they can set the standards for staffing, safety precautions, postoperative care, etc.
Reduced costs – The surgical facility fee at thousands of surgery centers throughout the nation averages approximately 40% less than at hospitals.
Dependability – Scheduled surgery times are not likely to be delayed or bumped by non-related emergencies.
Quality – Our uncompromising dedication to quality and patient service is evidenced by our patient satisfaction. Anesthesia is provided solely by anesthesiologists.
Convenience – Tallgrass Ambulatory Surgical Center was developed with the patient in mind. We’ve attempted to make it as easy as possible for our patients to locate, register and prepare for their surgeries. We provide a fully accessible first-floor facility with a drive-up, covered entrance and convenient parking.
Comfort – Patients and their families can relax in a pleasant environment. The patient can usually spend the recovery period after surgery with their loved ones in an ASC. Our staff pays particular attention to your special needs.
Personal – Our nursing staff is composed of highly qualified registered nurses. We provide friendly, personal service and a nurse will call you to see how you are doing and answer any questions you may have about recovery.
Choice – Having a choice means more competitive fees and better responsiveness to patients’ needs.
